Three in four Britons feel unfavourable towards Donald Trump

Hillary Clinton receives more positive ratings

Looking ahead to the 2016 American Presidential race, the British public weigh in with their thoughts on two of the most recognisable candidates for Ipsos’s latest Political Monitor.

When we asked the public if they have a favourable or unfavourable opinion of Democrat frontrunner Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump we find Mrs. Clinton to be better perceived by Britons than Mr. Trump. More than half (56%) of those surveyed said they have a favourable opinion of the former First Lady while 15% say they have an unfavourable opinion of her. This compares to 12% who say they have a favourable opinion of Donald Trump and three in four (74%) who have an unfavourable opinion him.

Donald Trump is seen as more unfavourable than Hillary Clinton across all parties and demographics, and receives most negative ratings among those in social class AB (88% of whom are unfavourable). Labour supporters are most positive towards Hillary Clinton, at 67%.

Gideon Skinner, Head of Political Research at Ipsos, said:

“Donald Trump is making all the headlines on both sides of the Atlantic, and our polling in the US shows he is currently leading among Republicans, but in a head-to-head Hillary Clinton is just in front. In Briton there is a more unanimous view – and it’s one of disapproval. The Clinton name on the other hand still brings more positive associations over here."

Technical note

Ipsos interviewed a representative sample of 1,040 adults aged 18+ across Great Britain. Interviews were conducted by telephone 12-14 December 2015. Data are weighted to match the profile of the population.
