Missions, Milestones and Priorities

Track the government's performance on its key missions, milestones, and priorities.

Prior to the 2024 General Election the Labour party set out its five missions for government, which are outcomes focused ambitions that the government has said will take about a decade to deliver.

Following their election victory, the government followed up on the missions with 'Labour's first steps for change' and their 'Plan for Change', which outline additional milestones and priorities with more measurable targets.

Missions

The missions are:

  • “Kickstart economic growth” to secure the highest sustained growth in the G7 – with good jobs and productivity growth in every part of the country making everyone, not just a few, better off
  • “Make Britain a clean energy superpower” to cut bills, create jobs and deliver security with cheaper, zero-carbon electricity by 2030, accelerating to net zero
  • “Build an NHS fit for the future” that is there when people need it; with fewer lives lost to the biggest killers; in a fairer Britain, where everyone lives well for longer
  • “Take back our streets” by halving serious violent crime and raising confidence in the police and criminal justice system to its highest levels
  • “Break down barriers to opportunity” by reforming our childcare and education systems, to make sure there is no class ceiling on the ambitions of young people in Britain

We will regularly ask the public for their views on the government's performance against these missions and publish the results here.

Milestones and priorities

The government also outlined other key milestones and priorities, which it says are tangible goals that it is seeking to achieve by the end of the Parliament. These milestones and priorities are:

  • Cutting energy bills and boosting home energy security by setting up Great British Energy
  • Cutting NHS waiting times with 40,000 more appointments each week, during evenings and weekends
  • Delivering economic stability to keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible
  • Ensuring at least 92% of NHS hospital patients in England wait no longer than 18 weeks for elective treatment
  • Raising living standards in every part of the UK
  • Reducing the number of small boat crossings and restoring order to the asylum system by clearing the backlog, enforcing returns, stopping criminal gangs and setting up a Border Security Command
  • Reducing net migration from the record high levels seen in recent years by reforming our approach to the labour market, addressing skills shortages here in the UK, and clamping down on employers who exploit the visa system
  • Reducing anti-social behaviour by providing more neighbourhood police, tougher penalties for offenders and a new network of youth hubs
  • Putting police back on the beat with a named officer for every neighbourhood
  • Strengthening Britain’s armed forces and protecting the country’s national security
  • Building 1.5m homes in England
  • Ensuring that at least 75% of five-year-olds in England are ready to learn when they start school
  • Recruiting 6,500 new teachers in key subjects
