Young Runaways

Evaluation of a new form of police interview to identify the support needs of young people who run away from home or residential care.
Grampian Police piloted a new form of interview, the Return Home Welfare Interview (RHWI), designed to ensure that the needs of young people who run away from home or residential care are identified, and that they receive the support they need. In collaboration with the University of Stirling, we were commissioned by the Scottish Government to evaluate the effectiveness of two alternative models of delivery. Quantitative analysis of police data was undertaken to examine whether there were any trends in runaway incidents, to profile the young people who ran away, and to assess the cost of delivering RHWIs. The qualitative component consisted of semi-structured interviews with a range of key stakeholders involved in the pilot and young people who received an RHWI.
