The Average American has Visited Just 12 States

Washington, DC -- It might be time to rethink the idea that Americans are a well-traveled people. Despite being a nation founded on westward expansion and one that considers the road trip as a hallmark of family summer travel, it turns out that a typical American has visited just one in four states. According a to study Ipsos Public Affairs conducted for Livability.com, the average American has visited just 12.5 states. Democrats are slightly less-traveled (10.8) than Republicans (13.9) The study asked more than 2,000 American adults which states they have lived in, visited and would like to visit. The results have broad implications for travel and tourism, real estate and economic development throughout the U.S.

No state has been visited by a majority of Americans. Florida, the most-visited state, comes closest with 48 percent reporting visiting the sunshine state. California, Georgia, New York and Nevada round out the Top 5 Most-visited states. Only three states have been seen (combined lived in and visited) by a majority.

10% of Americans say they have never been to a state other than the one they currently live in. Only five states (Hawaii, Alaska, California, Colorado and New York) and Puerto Rico were listed by more than 10% in the top five states they want to visit. Almost all of the remaining states were listed by five percent or fewer. See the full results at Livability.com.
