Ipsos/ Reuters Poll: January 2011
Some key findings:
- With the economy showing signs of life, more Americans are likely to say the country is on the right track (36%) than said the same last month (29%).
- Stabilization of the economy has been enough to help boost President Obama's approval rating to 50% (from 45% in December). Most of the gains have come from Democrats (+6 approval) and Independents (+8 approval).
- Turning to the federal budget and the upcoming vote on the deficit ceiling, most Americans instinctually recoil from the idea of letting the federal government have more money (71% oppose raising the debt ceiling).
- However, few Americans are interested in cutting the big ticket items in the budget like Social Security (20%) or Medicare (23%). A surprising number are willing to examine cutting the military budget (51%) but politicians should stay away from cutting veterans' healthcare (18%).
