Ipsos/ Reuters Poll: June 2011

Washington, DC - Ipsos' latest poll carried out on behalf of Reuters and published yesterday sees Mitt Romney (32%) and Sarah Palin (29%) as the two most popular candidates among Republicans when it comes to casting a vote at the Republican primary. In addition, the poll shows no real change since last month in the President's match-ups against potential Republican candidates: no Republican candidate receives more than 38%, while Obama receives 50% or more for every match-up.

The poll also covered the Republican Medicare Plan: Ipsos ran a split sample, asking half of the sample about the proposals without telling them that they are part of the Ryan Plan, and telling the other half that they are part of the Ryan Plan. We found no overall differences in support for the Plan's proposals between these groups; that is, support for the Republican Medicare Plan remains consistent regardless of whether people know it is a Republican plan or not. On average, more people oppose the Ryan Plan (43%) than support it (37%), with one in five (20%) unsure; more Republicans support it (66%) than Democrats (16%) and Independents (25%).

Other key findings include:

  • Just over a third (35%) think things are heading in the right direction, down from 38% last month; 60% think they are on the wrong track, up from 56%.
  • There has been little change in the President's approval ratings, with 50% approving (vs. 49% last month) and 46% disapproving (vs. 47% last month).
  • When it comes to weighing up cutting programs vs. raising taxes, more Americans want to cut (48% total) than raise taxes (32% total). However, two in five (41%) see a mixed solution as optimal.
  • Republicans are more likely to favor cuts compared to Democrats, and Independents are more likely to say a `mix of both' or `neither'.
