Majority of Americans believe abortion should be legal
Washington D.C., June 29, 2022 – A new Ipsos poll finds over half of Americans (55%) believe abortion should be legal, 29% in most cases and 26% in all cases. These findings come in the wake of the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade, a case that previously granted Americans a constitutional right to abortion.
Most Americans (80%) are familiar (51% very familiar) with the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, and 41% rated themselves at an 8,9 or 10 on a 10-pt anger scale (with ten being the angriest) in response to the decision. Democrats are most likely to describe themselves as extremely angry (48%) and extremely afraid (31%).
One in two Americans (54%) say the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade will make the U.S. worse, 26% say no different, and only 20% say a better place. Democrats are most likely to say the United States will become a worse place (75%), a slight majority of independents (52%) agree. Meanwhile, Republicans are more divided with 36% saying a better place, 34% a worse place, and 30% no difference.
Finally, three in five (62%) say they are more likely to support a candidate who supports passing a law giving all Americans a legal right to abortion (replacing Roe v. Wade) in the upcoming elections.
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between June 27-28, 2022. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 424 Democrats, 380 Republicans, and 145 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.8 percentage points for Democrats, ± 6.2 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.0 percentage points for independents.
