Washington, DC -- Most Americans Pass Mock Citizenship Test

In a citizenship test asked of roughly 2,000 Americans, Ipsos Public Affairs found that a majority (84%) would pass with a score of at least 60%.

  • More Republicans (40%) got an "A" on the citizenship test than Democrats (33%) and Independents (35%).
  • Older respondents did best, with people 55+ getting an average of 4.2 correct answers out of 5. People 35-54 had an average score of 3.7 and millennials did worst with an average score of 3.3.
  • Midwesterners proved to be most apt with an average score of 4, scoring better than people in the Northeast (average score of 3.7), South (average score of 3.7) and the West (average score of 3.8).

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted June 27-29. For the survey, a sample of 2,010 US adults ages 18+ was interviewed online. The precision of the online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
