Americans want the government to shop domestically, no matter the price

Americans agree the U.S. government should buy U.S.-made products even if they are more expensive but don’t necessarily hold themselves to the same standard.

Washington, DC, March 30, 2021 – The latest public opinion poll from Reuters/Ipsos finds that quality and price are more important to Americans than if the product is made in the USA. While 69% of Americans believe that an item being American-made is at least somewhat important, 37% would not be willing to pay any more for that item. Twenty-six percent would only pay 5% more, and 21% capped it at 10% more. Quality (94%) and price (93%) are more important to American consumers when shopping, and 79% consider reviews and recommendations important as well.

However, when it comes to the government, Americans expect U.S. agencies to always shop domestically, with 63% agreeing that they should be required to buy American-made products, even if they cost more than foreign-made alternatives. Republicans feel the strongest about this, with 73% agreeing with this requirement compared to 57% of Democrats. This sentiment extends to coronavirus vaccines and other related pharmaceuticals, with 62% of Americans agreeing that the U.S. government should only purchase them from American factories.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between March 4-5, 2021, on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 420 Democrats, 377 Republicans, and 124 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.5 percentage points for Democrats, ± 5.8 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.0 percentage points for independents.
