Washington, DC, April 27, 2022 – This week’s Ipsos’ Core Political finds President Biden with a 42% approval rating as the economy continues to top the list of problems in the country.
Detailed Findings
Only a quarter of Americans believe the country is headed in the right direction, with the majority (61%) believing it is off on the wrong track. The majorities of Republicans (88%) and independents (54%) say it is off on the wrong track, while Democrats are split with 40% who say it is off on the wrong track and 45% who think it is headed in the right direction.
The economy (26%) continues to be Americans’ top concern, this time last year it was also the most important problem but to a lesser degree (20%). The second most important issue is now the environment and climate (11%) which this time last year was at 6%, an increase of five points. Democrats (17%) are the ones driving concern for the environment, followed closely behind by independents (15%). Crime or corruption and immigration (both 8%) round out the top 4 issues for the nation.
More Americans (53%) disapprove of President Joe Biden’s performance in office than approve (42%).
While President Biden continues to retain the support of the majority of his Democratic base (80% approve), he only has the approval of 28% of independents and 12% of Republicans.
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between April 25-26, 2022. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 476 Democrats, 359 Republicans, and 108 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.5 percentage points for Democrats, ± 6.3 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 11.5 percentage points for independents.
