Washington, DC —  In the wake of the Las Vegas mass shooting, public concern about terrorism has ticked up slightly, by two points (now at 14%, up from 12% last week). However, healthcare (19%) remains the most important problem facing the US today. Although Republicans in Congress are currently working on tax reform, only 10% of Americans prioritize the economy.

President Trump’s approval is at 37% this week, one point lower than last week (38%). Among Democrats, his approval fell 4 points to 9% this week, while Republican approval grew to 78% from 76%. Overall, 43% of Americans still strongly disapprove of the president, outweighing all of those who approve of him (37%).  

In our latest approval by state map, Trump’s approval has stayed mostly consistent across America. Although still relatively popular in the Northwest, he has experienced drops in many states including Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. In the six-month roll up of approval, his approval has not risen in any state.

In our latest Wh-Exit poll where Americans predict the next White House or Executive Branch official to be terminated or resign, Jeff Sessions again tops the list (15%). After dodging tweets from the president over the weekend, Rex Tillerson only went up 1 percentage point, now at 8% and tied with Steve Mnuchin.

About the Study

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters September 29 - October 3, 2017. For the survey, a sample of 1,659 Americans, including 694 Democrats, 568 Republicans, 236 Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points for all adults, 4.2 percentage points for Democrats, 4.7 percentage points for Republicans, 7.3 percentage points for Independents. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of one per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
