Washington, D.C. – This week’s Reuters/Ipsos Core Political shows that only a third of Americans (30%) believe the country is on the right track, unchanged from last week. Twice as many Republican registered voters (60%) believe this, while less than 1 in 10 Democratic registered voters (9%) say the same. Independent registered voters (27%) fall in line with the national total.
Trump’s approval ratings remain largely unchanged from last week, with around 4 in 10 registered voters approving of his job as President (42%). This number climbs to 81% among Republican registered voters, but falls to 41% among Independent registered voters and just 9% among Democratic registered voters. When it comes to specific issue areas, more than half of all Americans approve of his handling of the U.S. economy (53%) and employment and jobs (53%). Only about a third of Americans approve of his handling of corruption issues (35%) and Russia (35%) – two hot-button issues this week with Mueller’s congressional testimony in the national spotlight.
Healthcare (20%) and immigration (20%) remain the top two most important problems facing the U.S. among registered voters. However, there continues to be widespread disagreement across party lines as Democratic registered voters believe the environment (18%) comes second to healthcare (22%), while Republican registered voters are the most concerned about immigration (32%). Independent registered voters, on the other hand, fall in line with all registered voters in believing that healthcare (25%) and immigration (20%) are at the top of the list.
About this Study
These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters between July 22-23, 2019. For the survey, a sample of 1,118 Americans, including 963 registered voters, 441 Democrat registered voters, 398 Republican registered voters, and 92 Independent registered voters ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points for all adults, plus or minus 3.6 percentage points for registered voters, plus or minus 5.3 percentage points for Democratic registered voters, plus or minus 5.6 percentage points for Republican registered voters, and plus or minus 11.6 percentage points for Independent registered voters.
