Reuters/Ipsos Data: Democratic Presidential Candidates (01/30/2019)

Many Democratic presidential candidate hopefuls are not well-known to the American public.

Washington, D.C. - Although 2019 is just getting started, Democratic candidates are beginning to announce their intentions to seek the presidency in 2020. Ipsos, on behalf of Thomson Reuters, has begun polling Americans on their familiarity with certain presidential hopefuls and asking their perceptions – favorable or unfavorable – of each candidate of whom they are aware. We will be continuing this tracking over the next 18 months as the campaign ramps up and until a candidate is announced at the Democratic National Convention.

Americans are most familiar with Senator Bernie Sanders (79%) and former Vice President Joe Biden (78%). Biden (63%) and Sanders (61%) also have the strongest favorability numbers. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren (49%) and California Senator Kamala Harris (34%) are the most well-known of the female candidates – nearly half of Americans (48%) view both women somewhat or very favorably.

Familiarity numbers and favorability ratings are higher among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, but the pattern mirrors that of the general public for the well-known candidates like Sanders and Biden. Sanders (88%) and Biden (86%) are the most well-known, and they also receive the highest favorability ratings (89% and 85% respectively). Warren (57%) is known by a majority of Democrats and is seen as favorable among three-quarters of them (74%). Harris is not as well-known (42%) but is also viewed favorably by 74% of Democrats.

About this Study

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters between December 5-11, 2018, January 15-21, 2019 and January 22-29 2019. For the December survey, 2,257 adults ages 18+ were interviewed online in English.  For the January 15-21, 2019 survey, 2,306 adults ages 18+ were interviewed online in English. For the January 22-29, 2019 survey, 2,947 adults ages 18+ were interviewed online in English. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, each poll has a credibility interval of between plus or minus 3.4 points and 3.7 points. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of one per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
