Washington DC - President Trump’s approval rating is currently at 41% among all Americans. Republicans continue to give President Trump high marks on his performance, with four in five approving of the job he is doing as president (80%). Independents and Democrats are much less generous in their evaluations of President Trump’s performance, with just one third of Independents (31%) and one in ten Democrats (13%) approving of the job he is doing.
Currently, over half of Americans (54%) believe things in America are headed off on the wrong track. This sentiment is most strongly held by Democrats (77%) and Independent (64%). Just a quarter of Republicans (24%) believe America is headed in the wrong direction. Healthcare (18%), terrorism (13%), and immigration (12%) top the list of most important problems in America. Democrats and Independents are more likely to say that healthcare (24% and 21% respectively) is the biggest priority, whereas Republicans are more likely to say that immigration (20%) is the most pressing issue of the day.
Americans continues to be more likely to say they approve of their individual representative in Congress (42%) than the body of Congress as a whole (25%). A plurality of Americans report that if the elections for Congress were held today, they would vote for a Democrat (37%) and a third of Americans (31%) report they would vote for a Republican.
About the Study
These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters January 26-30, 2018. For the survey, a sample of 1,856 Americans, including 804 Democrats,632 Republicans, 265 Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points for all adults, 3.9 percentage points for Democrats, 4.4 percentage points for Republicans, 6.9 percentage points for Independents. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error.
