In the eighth year of the global Ipsos What Worries the World study, Americans are among the most positive people from among the 27 countries studied. However, with 54% saying they believe the country is off on the wrong track, most Americans are still more pessimistic than optimistic. Looking long term, American optimism right now is higher than the average seen since 2010.
Americans are principally worried about healthcare, terrorism, crime & violence, corruption, and immigration. Healthcare and terrorism, in particular, have been top-tier US concerns for several years, indicating the durability of those issues in the U.S. context. American concerns are in contrast to the dominant global issues which center on economic issues.
Around the globe, the economy is the main issue with unemployment and poverty as two of the top five global issues. Rounding out the top five are corruption, crime, and healthcare. However, perhaps indicative of the slow recovery from the financial crisis, unemployment as a main issue has steadily declined over the past eight years.
