Ipsos Core Political Survey: Presidential Approval Tracker (05/27/2021)
Washington, DC, May 27, 2021 – Only one-third of Americans believe the country is headed in the right direction as the economy remains a top concern. President Biden’s approval rating is at 52% this week, with 44% disapproving.
Half of Americans (50%) believe the country is off on the wrong track, a sentiment felt most strongly by Republicans (78%). Only one-third think it is going in the right direction, and 17% are not sure.
Americans are still most concerned about the economy (19%), but increased concern over the health care system (11%) has caused it to rise into second place. Immigration and inequality are tied for third place at 9% each.
Republicans (23%), Democrats (18%), and independents (18%) are all in agreement on the economy being the most critical issue facing the U.S. today. Opinions differ after that, though, with Republicans citing immigration (19%) as more concerning than discrimination (2%) and the healthcare system (6%). Meanwhile, 15% of Democrats believe inequality is most important, compared to only 3% concerned about immigration.
President Biden’s approval rating stands at 52% this week, with a 44% disapproval rating.
The majority of Democrats (85%) approve of President Biden’s performance in office. Forty-eight percent of independents approve of Biden, while most Republicans disapprove of him (only 15% approve).
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between May 26-27, 2021. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 440 Democrats, 380 Republicans, and 115 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.3 percentage points for Democrats, ± 5.7 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.4 percentage points for independents.
