Majority of Americans Age 45-65 Believe Saving for Retirement is Important

Washington, D.C. — The Ipsos/USA Today data on retirees provides insights into how 45-65 year olds are preparing for their retirement.

Key findings from the study are below.

Key Findings

  • Retirement was the second (66%) most likely (very/somewhat) item respondents said that they would put at least $100 towards over the next six months.
    • 92% of respondents said that saving for retirement was important (very/somewhat) to them and their family, with 62% saying that it was "very important."
  • When asked how prepared they felt about their retirement, 59% of respondents said they felt prepared (very/somewhat). However, 78% of respondents agreed that they need to save more to afford the retirement they want.
  • When asked how they planned to spend their retirement, 57% of respondents mentioned both "spending more time with family" and "traveling" as their top choices, followed by both "taking up a hobby" (35%) and "spending more time with friends" (35%).

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted January 11-16, 2017 on behalf of USA Today. For the survey, a sample of 1,205 adults age 45-65 from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. The poll has a credibility interval of ± 3.2 percentage points for all respondents and a credibility interval adjusted for design effect of the following (n=1,205, DEFF=1.5, adjusted Confidence Interval=4.7).
