About the Study

These are findings from an Ipsos dual frame landline/cellphone poll conducted for New America Foundation from February 24-March 9, 2017. For the survey, a sample of 1,000 adults from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were randomly selected and interviewed in English or Spanish. There were oversamples of 150 African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Asian Americans, and current college students respectively for a total sample size of 1,600.

All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Based on the sample size and common assumptions about the distribution of the underlying population, the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points for all respondents. Ipsos calculates a design effect (DEFF) for each study, based on the adjustments made by the weights used to ensure a representative sample, following the formula of Kish (1965). In this way, we can control for the proper amount of sample variability due to the design of the sampling method. This study had a confidence interval adjusted for design effect of the following: (n=1,600, DEFF=1.5) adjusted Confidence Interval=4.3 percentage points. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
