Reuters/Ipsos Poll: Interest in Mueller’s Congressional Testimony

Reuters/Ipsos Poll shows Republicans disinterested in Robert Mueller’s testimony before Congress.

Washington, D.C., July 23, 2019 — A new Reuters/Ipsos public opinion survey of 1,112 Americans found that more than half of Americans (62%) are aware that former Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller will be testifying before Congress.

Only a quarter of Americans (28%) plan to watch the testimony, and just 19 percent of Republican registered voters say they will watch the proceedings, compared to 46% of Democratic registered voters.

Democratic registered voters are much more likely to say that Robert Mueller testifying before Congress is important to them (83%) compared to just one in three Republicans (33%).

Just 30 percent of Americans say Congress has been fair and impartial in reviewing the Mueller Report, and a little more than half of Americans (55%) say that continued Congressional investigations into President Trump’s actions following the 2016 election interfere with important government business.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between July 19-22, 2019 on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 1,112 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 964 registered voters, 452 Democratic registered voters, 374 Republican registered voters, and 104 Independent registered voters.

Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error. Ipsos calculates a design effect (DEFF) for each study based on the variation of the weights, following the formula of Kish (1965). This study had a credibility interval adjusted for design effect of the following (n=1,112, DEFF=1.5, adjusted Confidence Interval=+/-4.9 percentage points).

The poll also has a credibility interval plus or minus 3.6 percentage points for registered voters, plus or minus 5.3 percentage points for Democratic registered voters, plus or minus 5.8 percentage points for Republican registered voters, and plus or minus 11.0 percentage points for Independent registered voters.
