Ipsos Core Political : Presidential Approval Tracker (02/09/2022)
Washington, DC, February 9, 2022 – This week’s Ipsos’ Core Political shows that Americans remain mostly disapproving of President Joe Biden’s performance in office.
Twenty-six percent of Americans believe the economy is the most important problem facing the country today, this is up four points from early January when it was 22%. From there, 1 out of 10 believe each of the following issues is most important: the healthcare system (10%), public health, disease, and illness (9%), and crime or corruption (9%).
Concern over the economy has risen eight points since last week among Republicans (from 26% to 34%) and remains the most pressing issue for them, with immigration (13%) as a distant second. While the economy (19%) is also the top issue among Democrats, they are more divided with the healthcare system (16%) not far behind, followed by public health (13%).
Slightly over half of Americans (51%) disapprove of President Biden’s performance in office, while only 43% approve of him.
After a steep decline in approval among Democrats last week, Biden’s approval rating has slightly recovered by seven points (from 71% to 78%) but remains low among independents (39%) and Republicans (14%).
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between February 7-8, 2022. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 437 Democrats, 351 Republicans, and 148 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.7 percentage points for Democrats, ± 6.4 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 9.9 percentage points for independents.
