Reuters/Ipsos: 737 MAX Poll
Washington, DC, December 28, 2020 – According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, 43% of Americans think airlines prioritize profits over passenger safety (22% say the opposite). While flying, 45% worry about technical/mechanical issues with the plane. Forty-one percent are worried about bad weather/turbulence and also about contracting the coronavirus. Just 18% say they do not feel worried when they fly.
Of nine considerations when buying an airline ticket for personal travel, ticket price (41%) and COVID-19 safety measures (24%) are the most important things (ranked #1) for passengers. Airline maker/model is lower on the list: 64% ranked it as 7, 8, or 9 on the list. Seventy-three percent of those who have heard of the crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia (77% of Americans) know it was a Boeing jet, and 66% know it was the 737 MAX.
With this information, 53% have at least a little confidence in the FAA. One-fourth (26%) say they are likely to fly in a 737 MAX jet right now, and 37% say they are likely to do so once it has been in the air for 6 months or more.

About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between December 8-9, 2020 on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 434 Democrats, 391 Republicans, and 111 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval ± 5.4 percentage points for Democrats, ± 5.7 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.6 percentage points for independents.
