2018 US Politics - Democrats have taken the Lead in the Generic Congressional Ballot (June 6)

38% of Americans approve of President Trump’s job performance as immigration tops the list of concerns for Republicans.

This week, 38% of Americans approve of President Trump’s job performance. Registered voters approve of Trump’s performance at similar rates (40%), but party line divisions continue with 81% of Republicans approving of President Trump’s job approval compared to just one-third of Independents (36%), and just one in ten Democrats (12%).

Democrats have taken the lead in the generic congressional ballot, with 38% of Americans indicating they would vote for a Democratic candidate and 28% for a Republican candidate if the November 2018 election were held today. Not surprisingly, large majorities of Democrats (81%) and Republicans (84%) indicate that they would support their party in the Congressional election. This week, Independents are split between a Democratic candidate (22%) and a candidate from another party (20%). Republican candidates (9%) have fallen behind among Independent voters in the generic ballot.

Healthcare continues to be the most important issue facing Americans (18%), with terrorism (12%) and the economy generally (11%) in second and third place, respectively. Party lines continue to influence perceptions of major issues, with healthcare (22%) being the most important problem for Democrats, and immigration (22%) continues to be the most important issue for Republicans.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions continues in the lead of the Reuters/Ipsos Wh’Exit Poll, with 20% of Americans reporting they believe he will be the next member of the administration to be fired or resign. Americans are equally split for the next most likely to leave the administration with the Administrator of the EPA, Scott Pruitt; Press Secretary, Sarah Sanders; and Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos all tied at 9%.

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters June 1-5, 2018. For the survey, a sample of 1,533 Americans, including 1,265 registered voters, 561 Democrats, 477 Republicans, and 150 Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online
