Almost half of employees, whose workplace allocates funds for Christmas activities, are prepared to swap employer Christmas gifts for charitable donation according to an Ipsos Observer survey for GlobalGiving UK.

  • Over two-thirds (69%) of UK employees say their workplace allocates funds for Christmas activities such as parties, decorations and employee gifts.
  • Among those employees, almost 1 in 2 (49%) are in favour of some of these funds going towards charities of their choice according to an Ipsos poll commissioned by GlobalGiving UK.

Among those whose workplace allocates funds for Christmas activities, 20% report being strongly in favour some of the contribution or funding being donated to a charity of their choice instead and 30% report being somewhat in favour.

Of those participants who are in favour of some of the contribution/funds being used for charity, 60% reported that the proportion should be a half or more of the total currently spent. Among those in favour of some being used for charity, 31% reported that the total amount that should be used for charity should be all of it/almost all of it or about three quarters, and 29% reported that it should be about half of it.

Technical note

The survey was conducted by Ipsos Observer in November 2023 on behalf of non-profit GlobalGiving UK. They polled a representative sample of 1,317 adults aged 16-75 in full or part time work in the UK. This survey was carried out using its online Omnibus from 10th November 2023 – 14th November 2023. Data has been weighted to the known online population proportions of full-time and part-time employees in the UK for gender within age and working status as well as region, social grade and education.
