Generation Next: Tomorrow's Voters Infographic

In this briefing we look at young people’s disengagement from party politics in the run up to the 2015 General Election, and their thoughts on lowering the voting age. We also examine alternative ways in which young people are engaged, including volunteering their time to help others and the environment. Lastly, we explore the issues that young people consider to be priorities in regards to what the government should be tackling in their local area, and how the government should be spending money nationally.

These are the key findings from the 2014 Young People Omnibus Survey of secondary school pupils, carried out by the Ipsos Social Research Institute on behalf of the National Children’s Bureau. The Young People Omnibus provides a snapshot of the experiences and aspirations of young people attending state schools in England and Wales today.

Technical note

• The topline results outlined below are based on a dataset of 2,734 completed interviews conducted among school children aged 11-16 in England and Wales.
• Self-completion questionnaires were completed in classroom sessions between 3rd February and 10th April 2014.
• Data have been weighted by gender, year group and region.
• Results are based on all pupils in England and Wales, unless otherwise stated.
• An asterisk (*) represents a value of less than half a per cent, but not zero.
• Where results do not sum to 100%, this is due to multiple responses or computer rounding.
