Honey Bee Research 2012

Friends of the Earth commissioned Ipsos as part of The Bee Cause campaign, to get a sense of the public's knowledge of these key pollinators, which are facing steep decline in the UK.

Friends of the Earth commissioned a survey with with Ipsos to establish whether individuals could identify the image of a honey bee from a variety of wasps, flys and a hornet. The research found that only 12% of individuals were able to recognise the honey bee.

Questions were also asked on whether individuals could put a figure to the value of bees’ contribution to UK agriculture per year and for those that had a garden, how likely they would be to plant Bee friendly plants.

Also when asked how interested people would be to learn more about bees and other pollinating insects, 67% said they would be interested.

Technical note Ipsos’s i:omnibus interviewed a representative sample of 1,253 adults aged 16+ across Great Britain. Interviews were conducted online from 28th September – 2nd October 2012. Data has been weighted to match the profile of the GB population.
