MCC Committee Announces New Vote on Women Members
The Committee of MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) commissioned MORI to undertake a comprehensive survey aimed at establishing a clear understanding of members' views on the question of women members
The Committee of MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) announced today that it will ask the Club to vote again on the question of women members next month. This follows a poll in February of this year in which a 56% majority voted in favour but which fell short of the two-thirds majority necessary to effect a change in the rules of the Club.
Following the February poll and the subsequent AGM, the Committee commissioned MORI to undertake a comprehensive survey aimed at establishing a clear understanding of members' views. This was conducted in June, when all members were invited to complete a postal questionnaire. Well over half responded.
The information document which has been sent to all MCC members was produced by a working party under the chairmanship of Anthony Wreford. Mr Wreford said, "the document explains the proposed procedures for the election of women and the implications for members' facilities and for the membership waiting list. It sets out the key findings from the MORI research, explains the Committee's views, and includes comments from a number of MCC members who are prominent figures in the world of cricket. It thus addresses the issue from three different perspectives - from the position of members, from the view of the Committee and from the perspective of our many friends in cricket who place importance on MCC saying yes to women".
