In 2005, Ipsos was commissioned by the Audit Commission to conduct a survey to assess the experiences of households about neighbourhood crime and anti-social behaviour. The survey provided research data for the Audit Commission's national study of how public services and local people are working together to achieve community safety at a neighbourhood level.

The survey was designed to provide details of what influences local residents' perceptions of crime, anti-social behaviour, personal safety, and reassurance.

Technical details

There were three survey elements to the assessment required by the Audit Commission:

  • An Adult Ward Based Survey using face-to-face in-home interviews among a representative sample of 1,076 residents aged 16+ living in 12 wards of six local authorities in England and Wales;
  • In conjunction with the Adult Survey, interviews were conducted face-to-face in-home with a total of 107 children within the 12 wards, using a similar, but shorter, questionnaire where an adult respondent, with one or more children under 18 in their household, gave permission for their child to be interviewed;
  • A nationally representative face-to-face survey among 2,161 adults aged 15+ using Ipsos's Omnibus, which asked six key questions taken from the Adult Survey -- thus enabling regional comparisons to be made.
  • Fieldwork conducted between 23 May and 20 July 2005
