Police Accountability and Governance Structures

The Association of Police Authorities (APA) commissioned the Ipsos Crime & Justice research team to carry out a series of discussion workshops to establish public attitudes to changes to police governance, and in particular the proposed role of elected Police Commissioners, as outlined in the Home Office 'Policing in the 21st Century' consultation paper.
The Association of Police Authorities (APA) commissioned the Ipsos Crime & Justice team to carry out a series of discussion workshops to establish perspectives to and reactions towards changes to police governance, and in particular the proposed role of elected Police Commissioners, as outlined in the Home Office Policing in the 21st Century consultation paper. Workshops took place in 4 locations throughout England and Wales in August 2010 and participants were asked to state their preferences around several aspects of the proposals including who should be in charge, what characteristics were important to this role, what area should be covered and what powers should be available to the new commissioner or governing body
