Over recent years, Citizens Advice Bureaux in Scotland have seen a steady increase in the number of client seeking advice on certain debt-related issues, including rent and Council Tax arrears, benefits overpayments, and problems with credit and store cards. To obtain a clearer picture of factors underpinning this increase, Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) commissioned Ipsos to undertake research into how the people of Scotland view personal finance issues, including the affordability of bills/repayments, debt, credit, and planning for the future.

The research comprised a survey among members of Ipsos’s online panel, with the sample drawn to be representative of the population of Scotland in terms of sex, age, region and working status.  The survey ran from 22 February until 2 March 2017.
