A Bit of Holiday Green for the Emerald City and Vicinity
Seattle, WA - A recent survey conducted by Ipsos MarketQuest found Puget Sound area residents spending a quiet and green holiday at home - including shopping for a lot of gifts online.
The beauty of the Pacific Northwest is around us every day, and the holidays offer an opportunity to take advantage of the greenery. More than half of area residents (58%) indicated they prefer real trees at the holiday, with most also preferring smaller independent (37%) or cut-it-yourself (33%) locations to get their holiday trees.
And while 76% plan to decorate with some type of greenery - with trees (58%) and wreaths (50%) being most popular - most take it easy on the outdoor lighting displays. Almost half (47%) of area residents don't plan to decorate the outside of their house at all and an additional 44% will limit themselves to just a few lights.
It appears most are planning a quiet holiday at home, with over half (57%) not planning to travel at all to celebrate the holidays with others; and only one-third (33%) planning to have any visitors traveling to celebrate with them at their home.
"While the survey results indicate we're going to spend some quiet, green time at home, it doesn't mean we won't be active and spending money," says Mary Kaye O'Brien, Vice President and Managing Director with Ipsos MarketQuest in Seattle. "We found that residents plan to do a lot of online shopping this season, with 60% planning to spend half or more of their gift money online."
The most popular gifts being planned for purchase this year by area residents include gift cards (51%), toys & games (50%), electronics (46%), and apparel (40%).
These are the findings of an Ipsos MarketQuest survey fielded from December 4 to 11, 2013. This online survey of 363 Puget Sound residents was conducted using Ipsos MarketQuest's "Voice of the Northwest" panel - an online panel of more than 2,000 Puget Sound area citizens. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online studies of this nature, however, an unweighted probability sample of this size, with a 100% response rate, would have an estimated margin of error of +/- 5.14 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
