Ipsos/Reuters Poll: Republican National Convention Day 5

Washington, D.C. - Day five of Ipsos' convention tracking shows Romney holding steady against Obama. Our take on the convention so far is that it is doing exactly what it needed to for Romney: improving his `likeability' factor.
  • On Voting Intention, Romney is on 44% to Obama's 43% - basically no change from yesterday's numbers (44%-42%)
  • On the candidate attributes (see also charts attached), Romney has improved notably on:
    • "A man of faith" - at 46%, up from 43% yesterday and 40% on Day 1
    • "Tough enough for the job" - at 39%, up from 37% yesterday and 36% on Day 1
    • "Likeable" - at 31%, up from 30% yesterday and 26% on Day 1
    • "Understands people like me" - at 29%, up from 27% yesterday and 26% on Day 1
    • ... although he still trails a long way behind Obama on "Likeable" and "Understands people like me"
  • Almost two in five (37%) think the convention is going Excellent or Good - up from 33% yesterday

As mentioned yesterday, this is a daily rolling tracker - this means that we conduct 300+ interviews a day, and aggregate data from the previous five days. The sample overlap that occurs as part of this process means that day-to-day changes will be incremental rather than large. The charts attached help to show how the data is shifting over the past five days.

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters from August 27-31, 2012. For the survey, a sample of 1,632 American registered voters was interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points for all respondents. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of a per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.

Non-aligned Registered Voters are defined as those individuals not indicating a candidate preference at the Presidential Voting Intention question (Q3 below).
