Consumer Confidence Up As Jobs Index Rebounds From Last Month’s Decline

Washington DC, March 15, 2024--The LSEG/Ipsos Primary Consumer Sentiment Index for March 2024 is at 53.1. Fielded from February 23 - March 8, 2024, the Index is up 1.1 points.

 

The index rebounded from last month’s decline and is now in line with its reading to begin 2024. It now sits nearly two points above its reading from this time last year (51.4).

 

The Current and Investment sub-indices both gained nearly a point this month. Both sub-indices are now around three points higher than their respective March 2023 readings.

The Jobs Index rebounded after last month’s decline, gaining almost three points and showing the largest increase among the sub-indices. The index is now in line with its reading from this time last year.

In contrast, the Expectations Index is down by nearly a point and is the only sub-index to decline. However, it still sits more than one point above its March 2023 reading.

The Current Index reads at 43.2, up 0.9 point this month. It now sits 2.8 points higher than its reading from this time last year (40.4).

The Expectations Index reads at 60.5, down 0.8 point since February. Despite this month’s decline, the index remains above the 60-point mark for just the third time since June 2022. Additionally, the index now sits 1.4 points higher than its reading from this time last year (59.1).

The Investment Index is at 45.6, up 0.8 point from last month. The index is now 3 points above its March 2023 reading (42.6).

The Jobs Index reads at 65.0, up 2.7 points from February and showing the largest increase among the sub-indices. The index is now in line with its reading from this time last year (65.1).

 


About the Study

These findings are based on data from a monthly 29-country survey conducted by Ipsos on its Global Advisor online survey platform and, in India, on its IndiaBus platform. They are first reported each month by LSEG as the Primary Consumer Sentiment Index (PCSI).

This survey was fielded between February 23 and March 8, 2024. The sample includes 1,000 Americans aged 18-74.

The data is weighted so that the composition of the sample in each country best reflects the demographic profile of the adult population according to the most recent census data.

The LSEG/Ipsos Primary Consumer Sentiment Index (PCSI), ongoing since 2010, is a monthly survey of consumer attitudes on the current and future state of their local economy, personal financial situation, savings, and confidence to make major investments. The PCSI metrics reported each month for each of the countries surveyed consist of a “Primary Index” based on all 10 questions below and of several “sub-indices” each based on a subset of these 10 questions.
