Ipsos Partners with Veterans Affairs in Fight Against COVID-19

Cooperative R&D agreement triggers the launch of the Biosurveillance Atlas Initiative

Washington, DC, May 29, 2020 – Today, Ipsos, the global research firm, announced the launch of the Biosurveillance Atlas Initiative, an important collaboration with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and human mobility data provider Safegraph. The initiative will accelerate the development of an omni-channel data platform to arm VA decision-makers with actionable insights about the COVID19 pandemic.

The Biosurveillance Atlas will provide VA with real-time intelligence from over 50 structured and unstructured data streams, including disease progression trends, human mobility and social media analytics. This initiative will harness data in critical demand to unearth reliable and actionable insights for safely reopening VA infrastructure and will provide early warning signs for potential future waves of COVID-19. This pandemic’s effect on health systems, economies, and livelihoods is profound and long-term, and effective response requires an unprecedented collaboration across government, and private sector partners.

Dr. Clifford Young, President, Public Affairs at Ipsos stated, “We feel a shared responsibility to see if there are specific areas where a new collaborative partnership across multiple sectors, including the social research and the data sciences industries, with key public partners, such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, can accelerate solutions to this pandemic. This cooperative agreement will be a critical step in ensuring that accurate, triangulated and timely data is easily accessible to our nation’s leaders. It will ensure that decision-makers are making the most informed decisions possible at a moment’s notice, as this pandemic demands. I say unequivocally that such projects are why I, and others at Ipsos, get out of bed everyday—to serve the greater good.”

Ipsos’ partner on this initiative, SafeGraph, is lending its expansive point-of-interest (POI) and social distancing datasets to the digital architecture of the Atlas. SafeGraph Chief of Staff Ross Epstein said, “We are very excited to equip VA and Ipsos with accurate point-of-interest and foot traffic data directly within the Atlas product. Enabling VA to make decisions and save lives is all that matters in times like this.”

“We are encouraged by the enthusiasm of our partners to enhance the Biosurveillance Atlas for use by VA leadership during this unprecedent crisis and to ensure its applicability long after the pandemic has been regulated to our memories,” said Dr. Young. “This collaboration will provide VA with necessary tools for safer reopening of VA facilities for out-patient procedures as well as early warning system to detect potential future COVID-19 outbreaks next winter.”
