Americans continue to be split on the biggest issues facing the nation.

Washington, D.C. -  The Reuters/Ipsos Core Political has begun reporting responses from registered voters in addition to all Americans. Just one third of Americans (34%) report feeling optimistic about the direction of the country this week. Registered voters (38%) feel slightly more optimistic. Registered Republicans (66%) are significantly more likely than registered Democrats (15%) and registered Independents (32%) to report feeling that the country is headed in the right direction. 

Thirty-nine percent of Americans approve of President Trump's job performance. This number is slightly higher among registered voters (43%). Registered Republicans continue to support Trump's performance and are most likely to approve of the job he is doing (80% total, with 51% strongly approving). Registered Democrats are the least likely to approve of Trump's performance, with just 14% reporting they approve. Just 32 percent of registered Independents feel the same way. 

Congressional approval remains low - just a quarter of Americans (24%) and registered voters (26%) approve the job Congress is doing as a whole. Four in 10 Americans (40%) and registered voters (45%) continue to view their individual representatives more positively than the entire body of Congress. Registered Democrats (50%) and Republicans (48%)  are equally likely to approve of their representatives, but registered independents (36%) are the least likely to approve of the job their congressperson is doing in Washington. 

Americans remain split on their perceptions of the most important problems that the nation faces; however, healthcare (20%) and immigration (17%) remain consistently at the top of the list. Registered voters have similar perceptions, with 20 percent viewing healthcare as the main issue and 18 percent viewing it as immigration. Partisanship continues to drive perceptions of the biggest problems. Registered Democrats are more likely to say the most important problem facing the country is healthcare (27%), followed by morality (11%) and the economy (11%). Registered Republicans (32%) continue to see immigration as the biggest issue , followed by the economy (13%) and healthcare (12%). Healthcare (23%) is the top priority for registered Independents, followed by immigration (15%) and the economy (12%).

About this Study

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters between May 6-7, 2019. For the survey, a sample of 1,006 Americans, including 841 registered voters, 336 registered Democrats, 305 registered Republicans, and 167 registered Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all adults, 3.9 percentage points for registered voters, 6.1 percentage points for registered Democrats, 6.4 percentage points for registered Republicans, and 8.6 percentage points for registered Independents. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error.
