Reuters/Ipsos Coronavirus Impact on Recreation (04/29/2020)

Many Americans will wait until there is a vaccine before returning to professional sports games, theatres and amusement parks.

Washington, DC, April 29, 2020 — A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that some Americans are apprehensive about returning to activities involving large crowds, like professional sports games, live concert and theatre performances, movie theatres, and amusement parks until there is a proven vaccine for the coronavirus.

  • About a quarter said they would return to live concerts, theatres and movie theatres as soon as they reopen to the public (27%), but one-third said they would wait until there is a proven vaccine (32%).
  • About 1 in 5 said they would visit an amusement park right when they re-opened, but 30% said they would wait until there is a vaccine.
  • A quarter of Americans would return to professional sports games when a vaccine is available, but just 17% said they would attend when the leagues begin hosting games with live audiences.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between April 15-21, 2020 on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 4,429 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 1.7 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
