Over half of Republicans believe Donald Trump is the actual President of the United States
Donald Trump's claims of election fraud has Republicans doubting the legitimacy of Biden's presidency
Washington, DC, May 21, 2021 - Former President Donald Trump’s stronghold over the Republican party remains.
His refusal to concede the 2020 election and calls of widespread fraud have raised doubts about the integrity of its results among his Republican base. Consequently, 56% of Republicans believe the election was rigged or the result of illegal voting, and 53% think Donald Trump is the actual President, not Joe Biden. Only 30% of Republicans feel confident that absentee or mail-in ballots were accurately counted, compared to 86% of Democrats and 55% of independents. As a result, 87% of Republicans believe it is important that the government place new limits on voting to protect elections from fraud. Finally, 63% percent of Republicans think Donald Trump should run for President again in 2024, compared to only 8% of Democrats and 23% of independents.
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between May 17-19, 2021. For this survey, a sample of 2,007 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 909 Democrats, 754 Republicans, and 196 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 3.7 percentage points for Democrats, ± 4.1 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 8.0 percentage points for independents.
