Half of Americans Have Discussed the Impeachment Proceedings with Family During Holiday Gatherings

Seven in ten say they are following the proceedings, with a third saying they are following them “a great deal”

Washington, DC, December 19th, 2019 — The latest Ipsos poll, conducted on behalf of Newsy, finds that half of Americans (49%) have discussed impeachment proceedings against President Trump during holiday gatherings this year. Two-thirds of Americans (65%) say they discuss politics in general more with some of their family and friends since the 2016 presidential election, although a similar number also say they now avoid the topic around some loved ones (64%). Another quarter say that, due to political disagreements, they have unfollowed people on social media (27%), or that a relationship has been put under intense strain (23%).

Seven in ten Americans say they are following the impeachment proceedings a great deal or somewhat (69%), and Democrats are especially likely to pay attention to this issue (82%). However, this is not necessarily influencing how Americans feel about impeachment – 37% of Americans say that neither watching the hearings or media coverage of them, nor President Trump’s reaction to impeachment has changed their opinion of it.

With regards to how they feel about President Trump’s re-election chances, four in ten Americans (41%) believe that President Trump will be re-elected in 2020, compared to the 28% who believe that a Democratic candidate will win. However, only three in ten say that they want President Trump to be re-elected (32%), compared to 38% who want a Democratic candidate. Among Republicans, 70% want to give the president a second term, compared to just 4% of Democrats.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between December 16 and 17, 2019 on behalf of Newsy. For this survey, a sample of roughly 1,005 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S. Alaska and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. The sample includes 418 Republicans, 382 Democrats, and 130 independents.

The sample for this study was randomly drawn from Ipsos’ online panel (see link below for more info on “Access Panels and Recruitment”), partner online panel sources, and “river” sampling (see link below for more info on the Ipsos “Ampario Overview” sample method) and does not rely on a population frame in the traditional sense. Ipsos uses fixed sample targets, unique to each study, in drawing a sample. After a sample has been obtained from the Ipsos panel, Ipsos calibrates respondent characteristics to be representative of the U.S. Population using standard procedures such as raking-ratio adjustments. The source of these population targets is U.S. Census 2016 American Community Survey data. The sample drawn for this study reflects fixed sample targets on demographics. Post-hoc weights were made to the population characteristics on gender, age, race/ethnicity, region, and education.

Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online non-probability polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all respondents. Ipsos calculates a design effect (DEFF) for each study based on the variation of the weights, following the formula of Kish (1965). This study had a credibility interval adjusted for design effect of the following (n=1,005, DEFF=1.5, adjusted Confidence Interval=+/-5.0 percentage points).

The poll also has a credibility interval plus or minus 5.5 percentage points for Republicans, plus or minus 5.7 percentage points for Democrats, and plus or minus 9.8 percentage points for independents.
