Ipsos Core Political Survey: Presidential Approval Tracker (06/17/2021)
Washington, DC, June 17, 2021 – The economy remains Americans’ top concern while approval for President Biden is at 52% this week. For comparison, at this time last year, former President Trump’s approval rating was only 38%.
Americans continue to believe the economy (21%) is the most important problem facing the U.S. today. Immigration is in second place at 11%, with crime or corruption in third at 10%, and the healthcare system at 8%.
The economy remains the most important problem according to all three parties. However, the parties diverge on the second most important issue, with Republicans noting immigration (19%), Democrats noting the healthcare system (13%), and independents being split between immigration and crime/corruption (13% for both).
Over half of the population continues to approve of how President Biden is handling his job. For comparison, in June 2020, only 38% approved of former President Donald Trump.
President Biden’s approval continues to be driven by strong support from Democrats, with nearly 9 in 10 approving, and is bolstered by 50% approval rating among independents. Republican approval remains low, with only 16% indicating their approval.
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between June 16-17, 2021. For this survey, a sample of 1,002 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 433 Democrats, 370 Republicans, and 114 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.4 percentage points for Democrats, ± 5.8 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.5 percentage points for independents.
