Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, President Trump’s approval rating stands at 44% among all Americans. Not surprisingly, Republicans are the most likely to approve of the work Trump is doing as president, with 83% reporting they strongly or somewhat approve of the job he is doing. Independents are split – 45% report approving, and 48% report disapproving. Just 12% of Democrats approve of Trump’s performance.

Just one third of Americans (35%) report that America is on the right track.  Republicans (66%) are most likely to report that things are moving in the right direction, compared to Independents (33%) and Democrats (13%).

Americans remain split on the biggest issue facing the country, but healthcare (20%) and immigration (15%) remain at the top of the list.  Healthcare is a bigger concern for Democrats (28%) and Independents (18%) than it is for Republicans (14%). Republicans continue to report that immigration (27%) is what they perceive as the biggest problem facing the country today. Comparatively, Democrats (7%) and Independents (10%) are not as concerned with the issue of immigration. When asked about how Trump is handling specific policy issues, just 40% of Americans report approving of his handling of healthcare reform, and 45% approve of his handling of immigration.

Congress as a whole is enjoying a slight bump of approval among all Americans this week, up 4 points to 30%. Americans consistently are more likely to approve of their individual representative, and this week is no different, with 45% of all Americans approving of the job their individual representative is doing. About half of Democrats (47%) and Republicans (51%) approve of their representatives’ work, while just 35% of Independents feel the same.

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters between November 14-20, 2018. For the survey, a sample of 2,232 Americans, including 889 Democrats, 850 Republicans, and 290 Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online.
