The American public is divided on President Trump’s refugee ban. On one hand Americans are in favor of controlling the flow of immigrants into the country, but on the other hand, many are opposed to singling out certain groups.
KEY FINDINGS
48% agree with the Executive Order that President Trump signed blocking refugees and banning people from seven Muslim majority countries from entering the U.S.
- This an overwhelming majority of 82% of Republicans
Nearly three in ten (28%) Americans believe the US should welcome Christian refugees, but not Muslim ones
- Over a third (39%) believe it is fine to subject people from Muslim countries to extra scrutiny if it prevents attacks, but 44% believe singling out a group based on religion violates American principles
- 44% also believe that the United States should continue to take in immigrants and refugees
41% of Americans believe America is setting a bad example of how best to confront terrorism, but are heavily divided across party lines. 70% of Democrats agree that America is setting a bad example of how best to confront terrorism, while 68% of Republicans think America is setting a good example of how best to confront terrorism.
