Browne Jacobson Shared Services Survey of Local Authorities

Research conduced by Ipsos for Browne Jacobson to understand attitudes towards shared services with chief executives, deputy chief executives, chief finance officers and service heads in local government.

The Government's recently announced austerity measures means over the next few years the public sector will come face-to-face with its biggest challenge to date - how to protect frontline services against the backdrop of the biggest cuts in state funding since the Second World War.

Ipsos was commissioned by Browne Jacobson LLP to conduct research with senior local government managers in England to understand attitudes towards shared services. A series of 150 interviews were carried out with chief executives, deputy chief executives, chief finance officers and service heads. This survey follows research carried out by Browne Jacobson in 2008.

Technical Note

At the end of 2010 Browne Jacobson commissioned Ipsos to conduct research with 150 senior managers in local authorities in England. Quotas were set for local authority type and council position. Interviews were conducted across the nine Government Office regions. Interviews were carried out between 29 November and 17 December 2010 by telephone.

Where results do not sum to 100, this may be due to computer rounding, multiple responses or the exclusion of don't know/not stated.
