Improving GP services: commissioners and patient choice

Ipsos were commissioned by Monitor to carry out a survey of the general public to explore their perceptions of choice of GP services. The survey explores what patients look for in a GP practice and whether (and how) patients exercise their right to choose a GP practice.
The aims of the survey were to explore the extent to which patients engage in actively considering their GP provider, whether they are able to assess which GP best meets their needs and whether patients have successfully changed GP provider to one that does.
The survey was conducted via Ipsos’s face-to-face omnibus with 3,315 members of the public aged 15+. The survey was conducted in England only and interviews took place between the 7th and 20th November 2014.
This survey was part of a wider program of work undertaken by Monitor, which also included interviewing 25 GP providers and speaking to and gathering information from NHS England, CQC and other stakeholders.
