National Student Survey 2023 results released
The highly anticipated 2023 results of the National Student Survey (NSS) are now published, boasting an impressive overall response rate of 71.5%. More than 339,000 students have shared their views and opinions. Renowned as one of the largest surveys of its kind globally, the NSS encompasses numerous aspects of the academic experience, including teaching quality, assessment and feedback, and course organisation and management. To enhance students' understanding and the accuracy of the survey results, the updated questionnaire employs direct questions with item-specific response scales.
The 2023 survey includes a question about mental wellbeing services and, in England, a question about freedom of expression. The final overall satisfaction question was not asked to students in England.
The survey findings show improvements in students' perceptions of the quality of their higher education, with notable variations observed between nations, individual universities, and colleges.

Reflecting on the NSS 2023, Sami Benyahia, Ipsos Research Director, stated:
While the National Student Survey underwent changes with an expanded questionnaire, we have maintained consistently high student participation rates, achieving the second highest response rate in 19 years. The willingness of students to share their opinions affirms the enduring value they place on their courses. The NSS serves as a valuable tool for universities, colleges, and regulators to identify areas for improvement. Ipsos takes pride in delivering the NSS on behalf of all funding and regulatory bodies.
