Scottish Household Survey Annual Report 2017

The latest annual report of the Scottish Household Survey has just been published by the Scottish Government.

The Scottish Household Survey (SHS) is managed by Ipsos Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government. The survey is one of the largest and most complex of its kind and provides the Scottish Government with robust evidence on the composition, attitudes and behaviours of private households and individuals in Scotland, both at a national and sub-national level. Face-to-face interviews are conducted at 10,500 households, and in approximately 3,000 of these households, a follow-up physical survey inspection is undertaken by a trained surveyor.

Data from the SHS is used for a variety of purposes, including developing and monitoring policy and strategy, service planning, as well as wider research and analysis.

National indicators in SHS:

  • Satisfaction with housing
  • Perceptions of local area
  • Access to green and blue space
  • Places to interact (available in 2018)
  • Social capital (available in 2018)
  • Loneliness (available in 2018)
  • Journeys by active travel
  • Visits to the outdoors
  • Attendance at cultural events or places of culture
  • Participation in a cultural activity
  • Public services treat people with dignity and respect
  • Quality of public services
  • Influence over local decisions

The key findings are available as a summary report and are also covered in an innovative data comic.
