The Information Services Division, on behalf of the Scottish Government, commissioned Ipsos Scotland to conduct the 2008 and 2010 studies of smoking, drinking, and drug use among secondary school pupils in Scotland. In addition to monitoring substance use, the Scottish Schools adolescent lifestyle and substance use survey (SALSUS) is designed to obtain data on other lifestyle, health, and social factors.

The main objectives are:

  • to provide timely, robust data on the smoking, drinking and drug use among young people in Scotland at both a national and a local level
  • to provide deeper insight into adolescents' substance use behaviours by investigating contextual social and lifestyle factors

The results are used to:

  • establish prevalence of substance use both nationally and at a local level (ADPs, local authorities and health boards)
  • provide a measure of progress towards official targets for the Scottish Government
  • inform the development and implementation of policy and service provision.

Over 37,000 S2 and S4 pupils participated in the research. The national and local reports are available on ISD's website here.
