The first national survey of housing association (HA) shared owners was conducted by MORI on behalf of the Housing Corporation.

The survey was designed to provide detailed socio-demographic data on HA shared owners across England ; this covers household profile, employment and social class, and personal finances. In addition, the survey looked at a range of issues relating to shared owner attitudes towards their housing and HA, the scheme and housing finance.

Technical Details

The survey was conducted in 24 local authority (LA) areas, which were randomly selected within the Housing Corporation's four regions -- six each in London , South, Central and North -- based on all HAs with shared owner stock. The 24 LAs contained 82 HAs, including only those with at least 20 relevant units, of which 75 were eligible and participated in the survey. These HAs provided the address databases from which the sample addresses were randomly selected.

In total, 812 interviews were completed with shared owners. Fieldwork was conducted face-to-face in respondents' homes between October 2003 and January 2004. Weighting was applied to the data based on the overall shared owner stock profile within the Corporation's four regions.
