Sixty-four percent of GB adults select London as the UK city with the highest NO2 levels

While Defra data shows that levels of Nitrogen Dioxide are higher in Manchester than they are in London, only 4% of respondents selected Manchester when asked to pick which UK city, out of a possible list of 11, has the highest NO2 levels, compared with 64% who selected London.

New polling from Ipsos commissioned by the Clean Cities Campaign found that, when presented with a list of 11 UK cities, 64% of GB adults respondents selected London as the UK city with the highest average annual concentration of Nitogen Dioxide (NO2), compared to just 7% choosing Birmingham and 4% Manchester and 2% or less for any other city 14% selected “Don’t know” when asked to select which city they think it is. 

Data published by Defra on annual mean levels for Nitrogen Dioxide concentrations are published here. In 2022 the Greater Manchester Urban Area is reported at levels of 54 μg/m3, and the Greater London Urban Area is reported at 45μg/m3.

Technical note

On behalf of Clean Cities, Ipsos interviewed a representative quota sample of 2,315 adults aged 18-75 across Great Britain.  This included 211 adults from Greater Manchester. The survey was carried out using the online i:omnibus from 21st-26th March 2024. Data has been weighted to the known offline population proportions for age and working status within gender as well as government office region, social grade, and education.
