As the SNP gathers in Perth for its 76th annual conference, Ipsos has produced a briefing pack to illustrate the party's historical and current polling performance and to highlight the issues that are likely to dominate next year's election campaign.
Our most recent poll in August shows Holyrood support for the SNP at similar levels to those it achieved in winning the 2007 election. Despite this, the poll shows Labour moving slightly ahead, picking up support from all other parties since the UK election in May. More positively for the SNP, satisfaction with the First Minister remains higher than with the leaders of the UK coalition parties, with over half of Scots expressing satisfaction with the job he is doing.
As the 2011 Holyrood election draws nearer and the SNP bids for re-election, it is clear that the economy will be a key battleground. Economic issues are top of the public's agenda while Scottish independence has fallen down the list of public priorities. With the prospect of cuts to public services looming, Scots are split over the need to cut spending on public services though the vast majority believe it is important to protect public services for those most in need.
