Support For Replacement Nuclear Newbuild Up Again Among MPs

Ipsos's Summer MPs survey shows a further increase in overall support for the building of replacement nuclear power stations in Britain. Support is up 11 points to 72%, while opposition is up one point to 23%. This is the second year running of rapid growth in support, last year it increased by 16 points. Three-quarters of Labour MPs (75%) now support newbuild, while 21% oppose it.

Support is up 11 points to 72%, while opposition is up one point to 23%. This is the second year running of rapid growth in support, last year it increased by 16 points. Three-quarters of Labour MPs (75%) now support newbuild, while 21% oppose it.

Almost eight in ten MPs (79%) now agree that "Britain needs a mix of energy sources to ensure a reliable supply of electricity, including nuclear power and renewable energy sources".

Nuclear waste remains a controversial subject, and the primary reason for opposition to newbuild. But agreement that "I believe there is now a clear way forward on nuclear waste" is up 13 points to 41%, while 34% continue to disagree.

Technical details

Ipsos interviewed 108 MPs face-to-face between 11 June -- 27 July 2007. The results were weighted by the composition of the House and the proportions of frontbench and backbench MPs to ensure they are representative.
