Americans are more worried about gun violence compared to most other issues

Ipsos poll finds that more Americans are concerned about inflation compared to culture war issues

Washington, DC, July 26, 2023 – A plurality of Americans (37%) say gun violence is one of the most important problems facing the U.S. today, according to the findings of a new Ipsos poll of 2,009 Americans conducted between June 5 and June 7, 2023. Other top concerns among Americans include immigration (27%), government corruption (25%), and crime (24%).

In comparison, far fewer were concerned with culture-war issues like abortion (13%), LGBTQ or trans issues (11%), and wokeness or CRT (8%).

The poll also found that Americans’ concern with inflation trumped their concern with other culture war issues, though a majority are still concerned about them. Nine in ten (90%) Americans said they are concerned about the impact of inflation and cost of living increases on their family, while 63% say they are concerned about new restrictions to abortion, 63% say they are concerned with “woke business and businesses” pushing political agendas, and 72% say they are concerned with people pushing “inappropriate racial and sexual topics” with children.

About the Study

These are the findings of an Ipsos poll was conducted June 5 to June 7, 2023. For this survey, a sample of 2,009 adults age 18 or older from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. In this survey, the sample was divided into three groups, where 670 respondents fell into group A, 669 fell into group B, and 670 respondents fell into group C.

The sample was randomly drawn from Ipsos’ online panelpartner online panel sources, and “river” sampling and does not rely on a population frame in the traditional sense. Ipsos uses fixed sample targets, unique to each study, in drawing a sample. After a sample has been obtained from the Ipsos panel, Ipsos calibrates respondent characteristics to be representative of the U.S. Population using standard procedures such as raking-ratio adjustments. The source of these population targets is U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey data. The sample drawn for this study reflects fixed sample targets on demographics. Post-hoc weights were made to the population characteristics on gender, age, race/ethnicity, region, education, and political party affiliation.

Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online non-probability polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points for all respondents. Ipsos calculates a design effect (DEFF) for each study based on the variation of the weights, following the formula of Kish (1965). This study had a credibility interval adjusted for design effect of the following (n=2,009, DEFF=1.5, adjusted Confidence Interval=+/-4.2 percentage points).
